Learning the art of letterpress

In the College of Arts & Sciences' art and art history department, students are using letterpress to create new works of art.

In the digital age, the ways of Johannes Gutenberg’s press have largely been left behind. But a course in the Department of Art and Art History is bringing new life to the craft and teaching current Tar Heels the technique of letterpress to create modern art.

Led by Beth Grabowski, Carolina’s Kappa Kappa Gamma Distinguished Professor of Art, the course explores the technical skills of typesetting and linoleum carving for poster, portfolio and book projects.
