Robert Babcock, an alumni distinguished professor of classics, was a recipient of the 2018 Tanner Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching. Presented each year, the award recognizes excellence in inspirational teaching of undergraduate students, particularly first- and second-year students.
The Baton Rouge, Louisiana native told us about his teaching experiences.
Who was the best teacher you ever had and why?
Francis Newton, my dissertation adviser. He has been a close friend and mentor for 40 years now; that lifelong commitment is what makes a great teacher.
Describe a time when you learned something from a student.
I learn something from my students in every class; their unique and insightful thoughts and comments help me look at the material in new ways.
Name a surprising fact about yourself.
I did an apprenticeship in cabinet making, on the side, while I was an undergraduate; furniture making was Plan B.
