Carolina’s Jenny Levy named to National Lacrosse Hall Of Fame
Levy, in her 26th season as the only head coach in the history of the North Carolina women's lacrosse program, ranks third in NCAA Division I history in career wins, is a two-time national champion and a two-time National Coach of the Year.
North Carolina women’s lacrosse head coach Jenny Levy is one of eight figures—four women and four men—announced on Wednesday as the newest members of the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame.
The 2021 inductees are: Sheehan Stanwick Burch, Patty Daley, Levy, Ryan McClay, John Pirro (posthumous), Tony Resch, Kris Snider and Beth Stone.
The newest members will be officially inducted in a ceremony at a date to be announced in the near future.
The National Lacrosse Hall of Fame, a program of USA Lacrosse, was established in 1957 to honor men and women who by their deeds as players, coaches, officials and/or contributors, and by the example of their lives, personify the great contribution of lacrosse to our way of life.
The goal of the men’s and women’s selection committees is to select the absolute best of the best, within the context of an individual’s era of participation. A ballot committee develops the list of annual nominees, while a 21-member voting committee finalizes the selections.
The voting group is comprised of current Hall of Fame members, current or former U.S. National Team players and coaches, elite level high school or college coaches, elite members of the officiating community, and individuals that have contributed to the growth of the sport on a national or international level. Final approval of the selectees is provided by USA Lacrosse’s Board of Directors.
Nearly 450 lacrosse greats are honored in the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame, which is located alongside the National Lacrosse Museum at the USA Lacrosse Headquarters in Sparks, Maryland.
Levy, in her 26th season as the only head coach in the history of the North Carolina women’s lacrosse program, ranks third in NCAA Division I history in career wins, is a two-time national champion and a two-time National Coach of the Year. She was named the head coach of the United States National Team in November 2017.
Levy boasts a career record of 373-117, including 88-33 in ACC play, in 26 seasons. She has led the Tar Heels to 12 appearances in the NCAA Tournament semifinals, including nine in the last 12 Tournaments. Her 36 NCAA Tournament wins are tied for fourth-most in NCAA history.
The only head coach in Carolina women’s lacrosse history and among the collegiate game’s most noted figures, Levy built the Tar Heel program from scratch.
Levy has guided Carolina to 22 NCAA Tournament bids, 12 NCAA Tournament semifinal appearances, six Atlantic Coast Conference titles and the 2013 and 2016 NCAA titles in her 26 seasons. She is a six-time ACC Coach of the Year.
An outstanding player at the University of Virginia from 1988-92 and an assistant field hockey and assistant women’s lacrosse coach at Georgetown from 1993-94, Levy was named as Carolina’s first women’s lacrosse coach in October 1994.
She is a 1992 graduate of the University of Virginia and was a member of the U.S. National Team in 1992-93 and again in 1995. Levy (then known as Jenny Slingluff) played at UVA from 1988-92. She led the Cavaliers to the 1991 NCAA championship, scoring three goals in the title game and five in the semifinal, leading to her selection as the tournament’s Most Outstanding Attacker. A two-time first-team All-America, Levy was named the 1992 NCAA Attacker of the Year. In 2002, she was named one of the top 50 players in ACC history.
