Dear Carolina Community,
Happy first day of classes and welcome to a new academic year! I hope you’ll share in the excitement by watching this welcome back video.
I am grateful to be starting this semester as chancellor with you, and I look forward to what the fall holds. Every semester brings challenges, but I wouldn’t trade Carolina’s challenges for those of any other university because I know that we are well-positioned to tackle them together.
Yesterday, I spoke to our new students at Convocation and said that I think all of us need to be curious, willing to listen and ready to learn. My promise to you as chancellor is that I will listen and ask good questions — and always strive to be better at both. You’re going to see me, you’re going to hear me (especially at athletic events), you’re going to challenge me and we’re all going to share our Tar Heel pride.
I couldn’t be more excited about the year ahead. As we kick off the semester, I want to make sure to note a couple of items:
- Last week, you received an email outlining First Amendment and Free Speech policies and resources. For more information, please visit our new webpage dedicated to free speech and frequently asked questions about the rights, policies and limits on campus.
- Instructor emergency preparedness training is now available. We will continue to make updates to campus safety, including releasing training for staff and students.
- All University faculty, staff, students and affiliates and UNC Hospital employees with an active UNC-Chapel Hill email are now eligible for a free GoPass for GoTriangle bus routes.
It will be a fantastic semester, and I hope to see you at Sunset Serenade tonight!
Lee H. Roberts
