UNC-Chapel Hill received a record 14,931 early action applications from North Carolina residents for fall 2026 enrollment. In a highly anticipated change this year, in-state students were notified of their admission decision Dec. 18, approximately one month earlier than in past years.

Last summer, University leadership proposed announcing early action decisions for North Carolina residents before the holidays to give those students additional time to plan and make informed choices during their senior year. The admissions team consulted high school college counselors across the state and received overwhelmingly positive feedback, reinforcing that students, families and schools would welcome earlier notification. Implementing this change required college counselors and teachers to operate on accelerated timelines, while continuing to support students in submitting complete and competitive applications.

“Advancing our timeline is a tremendous accomplishment and reflects the outstanding work of our admissions staff and partners across North Carolina,” said James Orr, senior vice provost for student success. “For the first time in Carolina’s history, we are able to share these decisions earlier than ever before, which underscores our commitment to serving North Carolinians. Our focus now is helping admitted students connect with resources, events and financial aid guidance so they can see themselves at Carolina and join us in August in Chapel Hill. We are grateful to the college counselors and teachers across the state, along with our admissions team, for making this earlier decision possible.”
