Carolina preparing for second consecutive weekend of winter weather
In a campus message, University leaders shared tips and resources to stay safe as snowfall and single-digit temperatures are predicted for Chapel Hill.

Dear Carolina Community,
Another significant winter weather event, including the possibility of significant snowfall and extended single-digit temperatures, is predicted to move into our area as soon as Friday (Jan. 30) night. The National Weather Service is providing regular updates, and the most recent winter weather briefing is available on its website.
Facilities has been hard at work clearing ice from last weekend, and campus services, from housing to dining, are preparing for the possibility of hazardous travel conditions, scattered power outages and other local service disruptions again next week. We urge students, faculty and staff to prepare accordingly.
Stay home, stay prepared and stay safe. Staying home allows our first responders and facilities staff the space they need to safely respond as quickly as possible to emergencies and clear our roads and sidewalks.
- Charge your devices, prepare your batteries and gather your cold-weather gear, including blankets.
- Stock up on ready-to-eat and nonperishable foods such as easy-open canned goods, granola bars, fruit, bottled water, etc., as nearby and on-campus dining hours may be adjusted.
- Ensure you have an adequate supply of prescription medications.
- Bookmark the University Operating Status webpage for the current operating status for key campus resources such as Carolina Dining Services, Transportation and Parking, etc.
We are committed to prioritizing the safety of our students, faculty and staff and to making any decisions about campus operations with as much notice as possible for you to plan. If you have not already, sign up for Alert Carolina, our emergency notification system. This is the best way to receive the most up-to-date information and how we will communicate any changes to the campus condition.
Kind regards,
Derek Kemp
