Exchange student learns ‘there’s something always going on’ in Chapel Hill
“You will never be bored here” says Lucia Jinfei Pan Zhu, who learned about Tar Heel campus life, worked with Carolina Performing Arts and rushed Franklin Street.

When the new school year starts, Lucia Jinfei Pan Zhu will be back at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid in Spain.
But memories from the past school year in Chapel Hill will stick with her.
As an exchange student, Pan Zhu explored many opportunities unique to the American college experience and some that are unique to Carolina — like rushing Franklin Street following the Tar Heels’ men’s basketball victory against Duke.
“It was not just a basketball game,” she said. “It felt like more like seeing a whole community celebrating as one single family.”
The number of clubs and activities around campus impressed Pan Zhu, and she also enjoyed working as an usher with Carolina Performing Arts. “Even though it was a job, I genuinely looked forward to going there every day,” she said.
In the classroom, Pan Zhu appreciated professors who “want you to do more than just memorize.”
“I’m going to take back everything I learned and everything UNC-Chapel Hill has given me this year,” she said.
