A pandemic game changer
Clinical trials led by Drs. William Fischer and Tim Sheahan at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill showed that a new pill treatment eliminates the COVID-19 virus in patients.

For decades, scientists warned of the potential for a global coronavirus outbreak. But when SARS-CoV-2 emerged, no therapeutics, drugs, or vaccines were readily available. The Rapidly Emerging Antiviral Drug Development Initiative — founded by researchers at Carolina and the Structural Genomics Consortium — is not only finding solutions to the COVID-19 pandemic, but also drugs and therapeutics for future viral outbreaks.
Tracking SARS-CoV-2 Variants
SARS-CoV-2 variants may seem like a scary new chapter in the pandemic, but coronavirus experts expected their arrival. Scientists in the UNC School of Medicine and Gillings School of Global Public Health are tracking the variants to learn how they differ and affect the world’s chance of ending this pandemic.
Celebrating resilience
Carolina is celebrating its research endeavors during the annual University Research Week from Nov. 8 to 12. The celebration of research excellence displays the scope of work conducted by Tar Heels and aims to increase students’ participation in all levels of research activity.
The week is also an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the resiliency of our researchers throughout the pandemic. Though our classes were temporarily remote and the world came to a standstill for months, our researchers continued their work, with many working to tackle the pandemic and its challenges head-on.
University Research Week will feature more than 50 events designed to inspire, inform and educate the Carolina community. With presentations, workshops and lectures, the week will showcase the remarkable, innovative and life-saving research conducted by our world-renowned faculty and students.
As the signature event, four Creativity Hubs teams will present throughout the week, providing an overview of the significant challenges their teams are working to eradicate, progress to date and goals for the future. Panelists will represent respective research areas and various career levels.
