Women’s tennis advances to national championship
The Tar Heels will face ACC foe NC State in the National Championship match on Saturday. The championship match will begin at 5:30 p.m.
For the first time since 2014, the Carolina women’s tennis team (34-1) will play for a National Championship. The Tar Heels defeated the third-ranked Georgia Bulldogs (26-5) 4-0 on Friday evening in the NCAA Semifinal matchup at the USTA Tennis Campus in Orlando, Florida.
With the win over the Bulldogs, North Carolina set a new program record with its 34th victory in a single season.
For the first time since the regional final, the Tar Heels came away with the doubles point to begin the match. Fiona Crawley and Abbey Forbes made quick work on court one as they won 6-1 to give North Carolina the doubles advantage. A few moments later, Carson Tanguilig and Elizabeth Scotty secured the doubles point after they won 6-2 on court two.
In singles play, Fiona Crawley began the day with a dominant 6-1, 6-2 victory on court two to get the Tar Heels rolling. Crawley’s victory was her 120th as a Tar Heel and she is now in sole possession of sixth place all-time at UNC for career singles wins.
Freshman Reese Brantmeier notched her third-straight ranked victory of the postseason. She won 6-2, 6-4 on court one to extend the Carolina lead to 3-0.
On court five, Elizabeth Scotty clinched the match for North Carolina winning 6-4, 6-4.
Carson Tanguilig, Reilly Tran and Anika Yarlagadda’s matches went unfinished.
