    Winston is the chief executive officer of Winston Hospitality, Inc. He received a B.A. in economics and political science in 1984 from Carolina. He is married to Tracy Winston. Winston is currently a director of the Research Triangle Foundation. He is a member of the Institute for the Arts and Humanities Board of Advisors. He is a past member of the University’s Board of Visitors and National Development Council and a former treasurer of the Raleigh Chamber of Commerce. He is the former chair of the Raleigh-Durham International Airport Authority Board, former trustee for Ravenscroft High School, and a former board member of the North Carolina Economic Development Board, the North Carolina Art Museum Foundation and the Wake County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

    Hyde is the president of J. R. Hyde III Family Foundation and director of the J.R. Hyde Sr. Foundation. The foundations support public education, civil rights and other worthy endeavors. She earned a B.A. in English and religion from Carolina in 1983. She is married to Pitt Hyde. As a Carolina student, Hyde was a Morehead Scholar and was inducted into the Order of the Old Well. She began her career in the University’s development office, serving as executive director of the Arts and Sciences Foundation from 1987 to 1992. On campus, she co-chaired the Women’s Leadership Council and served on the Carolina First Campaign Steering Committee. She serves on the External Advisory Board of the Institute for the Arts and Humanities. In Memphis, she is an active board member of KIPP Academy, Shelby Farms Park Conservancy, the Women’s Foundation, and New Leaders for New Schools.

    Clay is the chancellor of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and professor of city planning. As chancellor, he has oversight responsibility for graduate and undergraduate education, student life and student services. He graduated from Carolina with a B.A. degree with honors in 1968 and earned his Ph.D. in 1975 from MIT. He received the University’s Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2002 and serves on the Academic Leadership Program National Advisory Board for the Institute for the Arts and Humanities at UNC. Dr. Clay, widely known for his work in U.S. housing policy, is president of the Board of Directors of the Community Builders, the nation’s largest nonprofit developer of affordable housing. He serves on several boards and councils that address public policy and education in the United States and abroad. He and his wife have one daughter.

    Curtis is the chair and chief executive officer of Curtis Media Group Inc., which he founded in 1968. In 1963, he received a B.A. degree in journalism from Carolina. He is married to Barbara Hoffman Curtis, and has a daughter and three grandchildren. He recently retired from serving 24 years on the board of the Carolina Association of Broadcasters, of which he is past president. He still serves on the Board of Directors for the North Carolina Community Foundation and the North Carolina Public Television Foundation. Curtis was inducted into the North Carolina Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame in 2002. His service to Carolina includes four years on the Board of Visitors and as a member of the National Development Council. He recently completed a term on the UNC Health Care System Board of Directors. He continues to assist the University as a member of the Board of Directors for the School of Journalism and Mass Communication and its private foundation. In 2005, he received the William R. Davie Award from the University’s trustees to recognize extraordinary service to Carolina or to society.

    Ellison is president and chief executive officer of the Ellison Company, Inc. He graduated from Carolina with a B.A. in history in 1969 and an M.B.A. in 1972. He is married to Jane Ellison. He is a former member of the General Alumni Association Board of Directors. He is the past chair of the Board of Visitors, the Executive Committee of the UNC Educational Foundation and past co-chair of the Kenan Stadium Expansion Fund-Raising Project. Ellison has served as the chairman of the Foundation of Greater Greensboro, Greensboro Human Relations Commission, United Way of Greensboro and the Virginia Episcopal School Board of Trustees.

    Gardner is a partner in Fulcrum Ventures, an Atlanta-based private equity firm focused on providing capital to emerging growth companies. He graduated from Carolina with a B.A. in 1977. His University activities include the Kenan-Flagler Business School Board of Visitors, board of the Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise, and the steering committee for the Carolina First Campaign. He also teaches in the MBA and BSBA programs at Kenan-Flagler. He chaired the University’s International Studies Advisory Board and helped lead efforts to build the FedEx Global Education Center. He was the founder and chief executive officer of OnTarget, Inc., a sales training and consulting firm. He is married to Barbara Lee, also a Carolina graduate.

    Hargrove is married to Sandy Hargrove and is a partner in the law firm of Brooks, Pierce, McLendon, Humphrey and Leonard. He was a Jefferson Standard Foundation and Alumni Scholar at UNC and received a B.A. with honors and J.D. from the School of Law. He was inducted into the Order of the Golden Fleece and Order of the Old Well. He was president of the UNC Law School Alumni Association and has served on the University’s Board of Visitors, the Board of Visitors of the UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication, the Advisory Committee of UNC’s Center for Media Law and Policy and the General Alumni Association Board of Directors. He was a member of the Peace College Board of Trustees. Hargrove has served on various boards and commissions, including the Governor’s Council on State Goals and Policy, as the chair of the Agency for Public Telecommunications, as president of the Center for Public Policy Research and as chair of the Administration of Justice News-Media Council. He was inducted into the North Carolina Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame.

    Perry is president of East West Partners. He received a B.A. in political science in 1971 from Carolina. He is married to Linda Perry. He chaired the Board of Trustees, served as a member of the Carolina First Campaign Steering Committee and co-chaired the Raleigh Carolina First Campaign. He was the chair of the Finley Golf Course Fund-Raiser and a member of the National Development Council. He is also a former member of the University’s Board of Visitors and three-time chairman of the Carolina Executive Cup Golf Team Fund-Raiser. He is also a member of the Greater Triangle Regional Council Executive Committee and a guest lecturer at the Kenan-Flagler Business School.

    Shuping-Russell is managing director of BAA, a unit of BlackRock. She was previously a principal at Quellos Private Capital Markets until it was acquired by BlackRock in October 2007. She graduated from Carolina with a B.A. in English and political science in 1977 and earned an M.B.A. from Columbia University in 1983. Her University service has included the University Board of Visitors, the Board of Advisors of the School of Public Health, a Trustee of the Endowment Fund, a director of the UNC Foundation and the Board of Directors of the Foundation Investment Fund, Inc. She is a former member of the Board of Directors of the UNC Health Care System. Shuping-Russell was a general partner with Intersouth Partners, an early stage venture capital firm, and a founding member and vice president of the Duke Management Company, where she was responsible for the private investment portfolio and an assistant vice president of Duke University. She also was vice president at McMillion/Eubanks Capital Management in Greensboro, and was a consultant with Cambridge Associates in Boston prior to returning to North Carolina. She formerly served on the Boards of Commonfund Capital, the North Carolina Biotechnology Center, the Council for Entrepreneurial Development Board, and as a trustee of St. Mary’s School.

    Smith is the chair and chief executive officer of Grady-White Boats, Inc. A 1965 Carolina graduate with a bachelor’s degree in industrial relations, Smith with his family established the Edward C. Smith Sr. Family Carolina Scholars Awards. He is the former president of the Educational Foundation Inc., and helped make the Eddie Smith Field House, the indoor home for Tar Heel track teams, a reality to honor his father. He was a member of the University’s Board of Visitors and the Chancellors’ Club. In 2001, he received the William R. Davie Award from the University’s trustees to recognize extraordinary service to Carolina or to society. He is married to Jo Allison Clary Smith, who has also contributed a great deal of her time to the University. They also support various philanthropies and other organizations through the Eddie and Jo Allison Smith Foundation. Smith was named the overall Entrepreneur of the Year in the Carolinas for 1998.

    Townsend is a former managing director and general partner of Goldman Sachs and Company. He received a B.A. degree in history from Carolina in 1977, and M.B.A. from the Kenan-Flagler Business School in 1982. He is married to Marree Shore Townsend, who also graduated from UNC in 1977. Currently, he serves as a senior adviser to Stone Point Capital and is a director of Belk, Inc. and a member of the Board of Directors for International Paper Company. Townsend is also a member of the Riverstone Group and of the investment committee of the Smith Richardson Foundation. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the UNC Investment Fund and served on the Board of Visitors for Kenan-Flagler Business School. He served on the Carolina First Campaign Steering Committee and is on the National Advisory Board for Ackland Art Museum. Previously, his family established the Townsend Freshman Seminars and the Townsend Family Professorship. He also serves as Chairman of the Board of The Episcopal High School, as a Trustee of Greenwich Hospital, as a Trustee of the US Ski and Snowboard Team Foundation and as a Trustee of the Grand Teton National Park Foundation.

    Washington is a distinguished attorney and partner at K&L Gates LLP (formerly Kennedy Covington Lobdell & Hickman LLP). She received a B.A. degree in economics from Carolina in 1987 and a J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1990. She practices in the area of employment law, including employment-based immigration. She has served on numerous boards and committees, including the American Bar Association House of Delegates, the North Carolina Medical Board, the Arts and Science Council, the Mecklenburg County Bar’s board of directors, the personnel committee for the North Carolina Bar Association, and the Levine Museum of the New South in Charlotte. She is currently a member of the bar’s special committee for diversity and co-chair of its law firm/law departments subcommittee. She is also a member of the K&L Gates Diversity Committee and chairs the Charlotte office committee. Washington was also named in “Best Lawyers in America” for immigration law, labor and employment law in 2007, and Super Lawyers Magazine for employment and immigration in 2008 and 2009.

    Jones is a senior public relations and international studies major from Atlanta. She graduated from North Atlanta High School in 2006. Before serving as student body president, Jones was chair of the “Intellectuals of Our Times” committee and co-chaired the Minority Affairs Committee and the Student Life Committee. She served on both the Carolina Union Board of Directors and Activities Board from 2007-2009. She also served on the Multicultural Council and the Diversity Board for the Health Sciences Library. She participated in Carolina United and the Leadership Institute in 2008 and was outreach committee chair for the Carolina Hispanic Association.
