Tar Heels settle into their new homes

Carolina welcomes 4,373 first-year students – its largest first-year class ever – as well as 785 transfer students to campus.

Thousands of Carolina students moved to campus this weekend for the 2017-18 academic school year that begins on Tuesday.

Residence halls opened to new students on Friday. Over the past few days, the students and their families have hauled in crates, suitcases, mini refrigerators and more as they set up their rooms.

“Now that I’m here, it’s a new chapter. I’m feeling really good,” said Daniel Vargas, a first-year student from Cary, North Carolina.

A few quick facts:

  • Hinton James is Carolina’s largest residence hall, with 964 students.
  • Old East is the smallest residence hall, with 64 students.
