A week to welcome Tar Heels home

From FallFest and Convocation to the Sunset Serenade and Bell Tower lighting, the finals days of summer are full of tradition at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

It has been a busy week for Tar Heels as they return to UNC-Chapel Hill’s campus for the fall 2017 semester.

In Jurassic-themed style, members of the Carolina Kickoff squad welcomed new Tar Heels as their more than 70-year-old tradition continued.

Family and friends pitched in through the weekend to get on-campus dwellers settled into their new spaces. By Sunday night, the incoming Tar Heels met for Convocation to hear from Chancellor Carol L. Folt and other campus leaders and link arms to sing the alma mater.

The same night, doors from Carmichael Arena opened onto Hooker Fields for FallFest. Hundreds of students enjoyed plenty to eat, games, performances by student groups and other activities to get new Heels acquainted with campus life.

The night before the first day of class, the General Alumni Association sponsored another Sunset Serenade, where campus a capella groups introduced themselves and their style to fans on Polk Place.

And just like a new year, the countdown was on Monday night for the Bell Tower to light up in Carolina blue, ringing in a new academic year.

Welcome home, Tar Heels! We are so glad you are here.
