‘A great step forward’ with Líder

A collaboration between the Carolina Latinx Center and UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School, the Líder program is empowering Latinx college students to become leaders.

Together, the Carolina Latinx Center and UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School are empowering and preparing the next generation of leaders through a program called Líder: Carolina Leadership Institute.

A collaboration between the Carolina Latinx Center and UNC Kenan-Flagler’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Líder is a year-long leadership development program for Latinx undergraduate students throughout North Carolina.

“Our hope is for it to be an interactive leadership development program for Latinx undergraduate students throughout North Carolina where they can build a greater sense of self-awareness and leadership skills, as well as feel more empowered and understand that they don’t have to check their identity at the door whenever they are stepping into a leadership role,” said Marcela Torres-Cervantes, the assistant director of the Carolina Latinx Center.

The program includes regular check-ins throughout the year as well as multiple-day sessions that bring the Líder students together.

“The fact that we’re able to pull each other together in one of the best institutions in the country is something really, really cool,” said Alessandro Garza, a Carolina senior in the program. “It’s definitely a great step forward for Latinx leaders.”
