Every Tar Heel knows Daniel Wood, even if they don’t know his name.
The graduating senior has spent his college years anonymously making memories for hundreds of thousands of fans at Carolina’s biggest games and becoming a regular figure at community events around the state.
For the past four years, Wood has been better known as Rameses, serving as a mascot for Carolina’s spirit team. The opportunity to play a part in the decades-long legacy of Rameses, he said, has made his years in Chapel Hill extra meaningful.
“Rameses is bigger than any one person,” said Wood, who is graduating with a degree in exercise and sport science from the College of Arts & Sciences. “He’s bigger than a character because he means something to the campus, to the town, the state and the community. It’s a responsibility for people like me because you need to be excited to make those memories for other people.”
