Alex Upton was surrounded by music from a young age, so when his middle school band teacher encouraged him to join the jazz band and take up the saxophone, he never looked back.

Now a junior studying music at Carolina’s College of Arts and Sciences, the Kenan Music Scholar connects with his musical intuition through performance, composition and improvisation.

“I feel like a majority of my voice — my musical voice, so to speak — is present in my composition as much as it is in my playing,” Upton said. “Music is the outlet through which I express how I see the world. I have so many things I feel like are unique to me that I want to express, and I can always do that through music.”

Upton’s musical skills have been recognized at the national level, including winning the 2022 North American Saxophone Alliance Jazz Saxophone Competition in April.
