McArthur, 4×400 relay team crowned ACC champions

Daniel McArthur defended his ACC indoor shot put title, the men’s 4×400 relay set an ACC Championship meet record and five other Tar Heels picked up All-ACC honors on Saturday as the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill wrapped up the 2020 ACC Indoor Championships in the Loftus Sports Center at the University of Notre Dame.

McArthur, a senior from Mooresville, North Carolina, defended his 2019 ACC title in the men’s indoor shot put to help the men’s team put eight points towards its team score. Heading into the meet as conference leader, McArthur jumped to the lead in the first round with a throw of 60-2 (18.34m). He secured the win with his second attempt but eventually won the competition with a mark of 65-2 (19.86m). McArthur’s second, fourth and sixth attempts would all have been good for first place in the competition – 64-10 (19.76m), 65-2 (19.86m) and 62-6 (19.06m) – as McArthur bested the second-place finisher by over four feet.

Carolina’s men’s 4×400-meter relay team redeemed itself in record fashion just one year after placing third in the event for second-team All-ACC honors. Brandon Cachon, Ryan Saint-Germain, Ari Cogdell and Isaiah Palmer ran 3:06.66 to set an ACC Indoor Championships meet record for the win. The victory continues a tradition of excellence in the 4×400 for Carolina and the relay time currently ranks ninth in the nation. Awaiting the final results of the remaining conference championship meets around the country, the Tar Heels’ ninth-place ranking would qualify the relay for the NCAA Indoor Championship meet on March 13-14 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
