The Old Well during spring

The University will celebrate the start of the new school year with virtual events for incoming students near or far.

New Student and Family Programs will begin the celebrations during its annual New Student Convocation at 7 p.m. The ceremony marks the beginning of the Carolina careers for more than 5,300 students and will be streamed on the University’s Facebook and YouTube pages.

The streamed event will feature several campus leaders and the premiere of the Class of 2024 banner. Chancellor Kevin M. Guskiewicz selected Dr. William Fischer, associate professor of medicine, to give the Convocation address.

The General Alumni Association will then host Sunset Serenade for incoming students. The virtual event will begin around 8 p.m. and will feature prerecorded performances by 10 of Carolina’s a cappella groups. The performances will be followed by a live question and answer session with members of the groups.

Registration for the event is open to incoming students on the GAA website. The event will be posted to the GAA’s YouTube page following the livestream for returning students, families and alumni.
