Dear Carolina Community,

Congratulations on reaching the last day of finals! It has been an especially rewarding fall semester, and I am grateful to each of you for your hard work and for finishing strong.

Speaking of strong finishes, this week marks the end of an era for UNC’s legendary field hockey coach, Karen Shelton. She’s stepping down after an undefeated season that ended with an NCAA-record 10th national championship, marking the end of a remarkable 42-year career. Coach Shelton’s character, commitment and love for Carolina have brightened our campus community and set an example for generations of players and students.

Her storied career established her as a pioneer of women’s sports for generations of student-athletes. These athletes were among those who benefitted from Title IX, the federal law intended to protect women’s equal participation in college life and in college athletics. It’s remarkable to realize that Title IX is only 50 years old and that the brilliant legacy of Carolina women on the field, on the court and across our campus has become such a firm and proud part of the University’s identity in that relatively short time.

My daughter and so many other young girls today know that they have the same opportunities in athletics that my sons do, a huge achievement that Tar Heels like Karen Shelton have cemented through decades of excellence. Progress is powerful.

At Winter Commencement this weekend, I plan to speak about the value of taking a long view, of resisting the frenetic pace and false urgency that pressure so many of us. When we work on the grand challenges of our time or the goals that really matter to us in life, it almost always takes time. Whether you’re finishing your Carolina journey this December or just taking a well-earned break, I hope the holiday season offers a moment to slow down, to reflect and look forward to the work and experiences ahead.

Sincerely,

Kevin M. Guskiewicz
