A message from the chancellor: We are a global university

"From cultivating a global mindset across campus to partnering with researchers across the world, we make connections that strengthen our state and establish Carolina as a leading global public research university."

Dear Carolina Community,

At Carolina, we are passionately public and we have learned over our 230-year history that serving our state means connecting North Carolina to the wider world beyond our borders. From cultivating a global mindset across campus to partnering with researchers across the world, we make connections that strengthen our state and establish Carolina as a leading global public research university. By infusing global content into the curriculum as part of Carolina’s Global Guarantee, we equip students with the knowledge and skills to excel in North Carolina’s global economy and become the next generation of global leaders.

We are driving opportunity in our state because of our global work. Carolina’s decades of research on the HIV/AIDS epidemic not only improves lives across the globe but leads to discoveries that benefit our own citizens. Our researchers have created an innovative technology solution to reduce the cost of ultrasounds, reducing infant and maternal mortality in childbirth worldwide and right here in our state. Innovative work here on campus helps bring global investment to North Carolina, creating opportunities for people across the state. And our brilliant faculty bring insight and context to world events, promising a path to greater understanding.

Last year, we rose to 11th in the United States for study abroad participation, and we are committed to climbing higher. Our new and popular Carolina Global Launch program enables first-year students to study abroad during their fall semester and then enroll at Carolina in the spring. Carolina was ranked as a top producer of Fulbright U.S. students in the country, with 16 Tar Heels selected in the 2022-23 cycle. We have partnerships across our campus with over 625 international institutions representing more than 100 countries. Our international student enrollment has grown by 17.5%. I want to thank Barbara Stephenson, our vice provost for Global Affairs, and her team for their visionary leadership.

The grand challenges of our time are shared across borders, and we see every day how events on the other side of the world reverberate here at home. Carolina graduates will be ready to lead and thrive in our highly connected world. There are so many ways that you can be involved in this work, and I hope you will join us.

Sincerely,

Kevin M. Guskiewicz
