A message from the chancellor on Graduate and Professional Student Appreciation Week

Graduate and professional students make up nearly 40% of Carolina's student body. Every day, they perform vital work in our classrooms, our research labs and our public service projects. They mentor and train our undergraduate students, and they bring energy and creativity to their work with our faculty.

Dear Carolina Community,

Last week, U.S. News and World Report released its annual rankings and again, UNC-Chapel Hill’s programs are among the best in the nation. Nineteen of our graduate programs were among the top 1o in their respective categories. Gillings School of Global Public Health was ranked second and maintained its position as the top public school of public health in the United States. Our School of Law ranked eighth out of public law schools and has jumped 22 spots since 2019. Altogether, 30 of our programs increased their rankings from last year.

Rankings aren’t everything, of course, but the trendlines at Carolina speak to the excellence, resilience and commitment of our world-class faculty, our dedicated staff and our amazing students. Accomplished researchers and public servants, they teach, discover, create companies, and bring a rich perspective to their work and our world. North Carolina has emerged as a global leader in medicine, life sciences, data analytics, media and more because of their hard work.

And so, it is only fitting that today begins Graduate and Professional Student Appreciation Week, in which we honor our graduate and professional students who make up nearly 40 percent of our student body. Every day, they perform vital work in our classrooms, our research labs and our public service projects. They mentor and train our undergraduate students, and they bring energy and creativity to their work with our faculty.

I couldn’t be more proud or more grateful. Check out this video in appreciation of the incredible work they do every day.

Sincerely,

Kevin M. Guskiewicz
